SUICIDE I

Previously the general knowledge on suicide was discussed. And it was stated that various agents of the society in one way or another contribute to the spate of the family.
FAMILY
How can ones family help to push one to suicide? Ever heard of busy parents?
Or should we call them “available but unavailable”. Usually these parents are too preoccupied with “work” and providing financially for their kids and forgetting that the children just as much as need guidance not just materially, but physically, emotionally and most importantly, spiritually.
The state of things in the country doesn’t make this easy to achieve; agreed. But it doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Children grow up in stages, from childhood through adolescence and then adulthood. No matter how grown up the child wants to claim, each stage is a new stage to the individual, and this is where parents are supposed to watch out for their kids, to guide them and help them adjust properly to whatever they may be experiencing. When this is duly provided, the child will definitely be Preinformed and aware of whatever challenges he is likely to face especially during adolescence.
When children are ignored by parents and left in the care of uncles or aunties or nannies. A clear message is sent to them, to live their lives as they place. And as humans, we all naturally always look up to someone from childhood, so when the parent influence isn’t there; guess who your child has to imitate? That aunty you left him with, that uncle that molests your child when you are not around, that neighbor with grownup kids who don’t behave decently. And when these children follow the models they see and do things they are not proud of, guess what follows next... for some weak hearted ones, very likely suicidal thoughts.

Another group of parents we would like to consider are the “unreachable parents”. You might wonder what I mean by that. Well these ones can fall into either the successful parents or the unsuccessful ones. Now suicide isn’t just for young ones so don’t expect this only applies to children. For the case of parents who may consider themselves ‘unsuccessful’, probably Ade’s father didn’t go to school and therefore has no certification to pursue a good job and ends up as a driver. (Please these characters are fictional). Ade’s father is troubled and doesn’t want his children to end up like he did. So what does he do?
He puts in all his money and time to train these children in schools or however possible, so that they can have a degree and find decent jobs to have a better life than he did. Now, he can’t train all 4 kids at once. So Ade’s father decides to send just Ade to the university, with hope that when he is done, he can raise money to help his siblings. Ade clearly understands what is expected of him, so he stops at nothing to try and excel in his studies. Unfortunately he has written Jamb Atleast twice now and no admission yet. The time for the next UTME is approaching. Everyone at home is hopeful. Ade’s father made it clear that would be the last time he would spend money on him for that exam. He writes and the result is out. Ade scores 174 in Jamb. Do you think he is going to school that year? Ofcourse not! The shame is too much. His father wouldn’t have it. He is depressed, slowly you can imagine the thoughts that will go through his mind.
This world is hard enough, let’s avoid placing undue pressure on our family members.
